B’ak’tun 13

Written by , Posted in Canon 7D, Washington DC

If you’re reading this it means the Mayans were wrong and we survived, lol!  The American Indian Museum celebrated the B’ak’tun 13 Festival last weekend with dances, a fashion show, and lectures.

This beautiful sawdust carpet was made by a Guatemalan artist Ubaldo Sanchez.  Traditionally it’s made with colored sawdust, but this one also included rice.  You can see towards the bottom of the photo where some of the sawdust separated from the carpet’s backing.

Grupo AWAL presented traditional dances from the city of Concepcion Chiquirichapa in the Guatemalan highlands. The dances are based on a cylindrical calendar cycle.

There was also a father and daughter duo playing the marimba.

The marimba is a musical instrument in the percussion family. It consists of a set of wooden bars with resonators. The bars are struck with mallets to produce musical tones.
